Class 3 - Y5, Y6

Welcome to Class 3 – home for Years 5 and 6

In Class 3 this term, our topic is WWII and many areas of our learning will be linked to this theme which always captures children’s imaginations.  

In English, our key texts are War Boy by Micheal Foreman and Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll. Both books are acclaimed stories giving us a child’s-eye-view of the war. Both books will give us some wonderful writing opportunities including a comparative discussion of childhood, letter writing in the role of an Evacuee and using our creativity to come up with alternative story endings.

Autumn Term in Maths has a focus on numbers large and small, from the tens of millions, to negative numbers and fractions. We will be refining our mental and written methods of the four operations and solving problems with prime, square and cube numbers. 

At the end of each maths unit your child will bring home a booklet to help to practice the skills learned and consolidate and secure their knowledge. We will highlight any areas we think your child could particularly benefit from focussing on.

Spellings will be set each Friday, with the test the following Friday.

Banded reading scheme books will be changed on a Monday each week, library books can be changed as frequently as needed. Please try to aim for reading 4x per week and record these in your reading diary.
