Supporting Phonics and Learning at Home

Please click on each curriculum area to find out some ways in which you can support learning at home. Your child's class teacher will also make some additional suggestions at the end each term's school report.

Literacy, Phonics and Reading

At Orford, we follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds for phonics, and supplement this with Badger Learning books for our developing readers.

The Little Wandle Website provides lots of videos and information sheets as guidance for how the scheme works:

If you click on the "books coming home" section, we at Orford send home Sharing Books - please read the guidance on how to support with these at home.

Sharing books are exactly that - you share the story with your child, asking them questions about the events and discussing what they think might happen next. For Class 1 and 2 children, these books will not necessarily contain the sounds they have learnt but will be chosen by your child and their interests so please take the time to read it to/with them if it is beyond their phonics capability. This can be recorded in their reading record and will count as that day’s reading at home. If they choose a book within their capability you will need to listen to them read it aloud and record this instead.

Once children reach KS2, we expect most to be self-selecting a book they are able to successfully read independently and fluently. In class, they work on using the reading VIPERS to answer questions about the books and texts shared.

Maths

Which methods for calculation do you teach my child at school?

We use the White Rose maths scheme in all classes at Orford CEVA Primary

Classes 2 use Sumdog for their weekly maths homework, and all pupils in the school have their own logins, to access sumdog.  There are options to practise multiplication tables or number facts. If you have lost the login, or are unsure of how to access this, please speak to your child's class teacher.

RE

We use the Emmanuel project from the Diocese of Ipswich and St Edmundsbury for our RE

There are some activity sheets to do together at home about our current home-school value. These can be found by clicking on 'our learning' - 'our values'
