Orford CEVA Primary School

Orford

CEVA Primary School

French (MfL)

At Orford, we aim to foster children’s curiosity and help deepen their understanding of the world, which is why children begin exposure to and learning of a language as soon as they start school.

We teach a carefully planned sequence of French lessons, ensuring progressive coverage of the skills. Our curriculum has been chosen to give children opportunities to gradually build on their skills. Lessons enable children to express their ideas and thoughts in French and provide opportunities to interact and communicate with others both in speech and (in kS2) writing.

In Key Stage 1 children, as part of class 1,  are exposed to French songs and basic vocabulary, on which they can build in Key Stage 2. KS1 children as part of class 2, cover the skills appropriate to their level, whilst gaining further exposure to vocabulary and short phrases. The focus is on repetition, enjoyment and confidence in speaking a new language.

In Lower KS2, children acquire basic skills and understanding of French with a strong emphasis placed on developing their Speaking and Listening skills. These are embedded and further developed in Upper KS2, alongside Reading and Writing, gradually progressing onto more complex language concepts.

We intend to inspire pupils to develop a love of languages and to expand their horizons to other countries, cultures and people. We aim to help children grow into curious, confident and reflective language learners and to provide them with a foundation that will equip them for further language studies.

Some of our chosen themes – eg, Let's Visit a French Town - provide an introduction to the culture of French-speaking countries and communities. At the heart of our curriculum is the desire to expose children to authentic French, so regular opportunities are given to listen to native speakers.

Our MFL curriculum map (below) provides the knowledge which we cover, and the skills progression document (below) ensures that children are accessing and developing the correct skills for their age.
